Darling Clementine
Finally we could open our doors for the first of many byOne pop-up events! byOne offers each of byHands illustrators the opportunity to do whatever their hearts desire, in our studio at Grünerløkka. For six weeks at the time our space will transform into a micro gallery space, showcasing our illustrators by turn, and whatever they’d like to show you. During the day it’s business as usual, but on the opening night (and the occasional weekend if the illustrators are up for it) we welcome in guests curious to sneak a peek.
First out were fabulous Darling Clementine, Tonje Holand and Ingrid Reithaug. The ambience in Nordregate 11 on the openign evening 27th of November was all Christmas spirited, with nostalgic carols and sherry in our glass. A great way to welcome x-mas! Next byOne will be happening over the New Year, and will be announced shortly in advance. So keep your eyes out!
We asked Ingrid and Tonje some questions:
How would you describe your style?
DC: If we would have to sum up and describe our style in three words it would be elegant, quirky and feminine.
What’s the best part of being an illustrator?
DC: The great thing about being an illustrator is that you get to spend most of your time at work doing something you love. You get the freedom to play a lot, but there’s also the challenge of answering to briefs and visually solving a clients’ requests. This balance between a fun task and resolving a brief is our absolute favourite thing about this profession. It keeps your heart young and your brain sharp! What’s the worst part of being an illustrator?**
DC: The worst thing about being an illustrator is that the work is always quite personal. If you have a bad day at work and lack energy, it will show in the work and this can sometimes feel like a very personal defeat.. But then of course it’s the opposite way if you deliver something you are proud of- which gives you the most wonderful feeling. Which of your projects are you most happy with?**
DC: We’re really pleased with projects that we’ve worked on where we have given ourselves dogmas- in a way rules to play by. When we did the series Les Charlatans, we used a very strict character build up, and kept it simple yet descriptive. In our new series Pantomime, we have been inspired by the Bauhaus movement, and gone back to using the basic graphic elements to create our designs, aspiring a classic yet contemporary look. From commissioned work, The Harvest tea packing we did came out very nice as we got to be in charge of both the layout and illustration.

What inspires you the most?
DC: We’re inspired by everything from classic films, theatre props and -productions, fellow designers, art, music and social media. It’s so inspiring to see fellow designers and illustrators deliverer high quality work as it’s challenging and forces you to focus.. very healthy! Tell us about your dream project.**
DC: A dream project for us would be to do an extensive collection for a clothes brand. A project using illustration on wide product selection as well as a thought through concept,- for instance on kids clothes, for a children’s book, for props in the shop and in display/shop windows. We absolutely adored the project Sac Magique did for H&M + Unicefwhich was a similar collaborations and came out really beautiful and different.
